We're here! We're queer! And we're going to... the dump???

I'm on the email list for locally-based gay rights organization, MassEquality. About once a week I receive a mass mailing from them, usually pertaining to a fundraiser or a heads-up about a political event. Yesterday's email was no different, requesting participation in an upcoming meeting as we get closer to the November elections.

Typically I will delete the emails because, quite frankly, between the herd of cats, Crew, ice hockey and work I don't have any spare money or time. But I saw "Winchester" as the location so I decided to read the note in its entirety, since it's the next town over from me:

Please Read, Take Action and Forward

Dear Elizabeth,

For the past few months, a growing team of your neighbors has been working hard to persuade local legislators to vote on November 9th against a ban on same-sex marriage.

Now - with the vote on the proposed constitutional amendment only three weeks away - we need you to join our team of supporters in Winchester.

Join us as this Saturday at the Transfer Station as we identify and activate new and old supporters of equality.
We'll collect signatures on postcards to hand-deliver to local legislators before the next vote on marriage equality, November 9th. As in the past, we expect this event to be a great opportunity to identify many local supporters.

Identify supporters of equality at Winchesters Transfer Station/Town Dump
Saturday, October 21st
Noon - 2PM

Meet at entrance of Station
7 Mckay Ave, Winchester, MA

Perfect for a first-time volunteer, this event promises a supportive crowd and training will be provided before we begin. For more information or other ways to get involved, please contact me at (617) 878-2352 or email

Thank you,

Are you kidding me?? The "town dump?" They want us to organize and take action at the town dump???? Is Winchester that terrible that the best point of congregation is a trash facility???

I can just picture the sign they'd hold so that volunteers can spot them: "Wer'e here! We're queer! And we're dirty!"

I'm all for supporting and protecting my right to marry a woman, but I'm afraid I'll have to pass on this one. Maybe the next one... but only if it's held at the sewage treatment plant or a local co-op's compost heap.
